Old Ferry Dock

Astoria Marine Construction Company (AMCO) is a century old institution on the Lewis and Clark River. I captured this fishing boat up on the ways having bottom work done. I am liking plein air painting more and more. It forces one to work fast and loose, resulting in a style that for me is much more satisfying.

Crown Point

This is my attempt at a grand landscape overlooking the Columbia River. I painted a study of this scene in plein air and took some reference photos. This painting was completed later in my studio from the study, sketches, and reference photos. I was also inspired by a oil painting I saw hanging in the Crown Point gallery. I can't remember the artist's name but he painted it in the early 1920's at the very same spot I was standing. I went home and painted one of my own.

The old Portland trolleys only run once in a while. Normally the newer trolleys run on these tracks on 11th Street. So this is a composite using a photo of one of the old trolleys.
