Lori
Oil 12x12
All has been revealed as promised. This is a portrait of artist Lori Margulies from California. This is my entry in Karin Jurick's year end portrait challenge. 180 artists entered and were paired up so that each pair of artists painted each other. No one knew who they were painting until Karin published the paintings on her web site. You can see all the paintings including the fine portrait Lori did of my ugly mug. www.differentstrokesfromdifferentfolks.blogspot.com

Columbia Sunset I
Oil 9x12
I liked the way this turned out and I may do a series. There is no shortage of subject matter at the mouth of the Columbia River.

A Few Miles Out of Ontario
Oil 11x14
On I84 in the early morning between Ontario and Baker city the deep shadows on the rolling hills caught my eye. Not a good spot for plein air so I snapped a few photos.
Social Security Beach
Oil 9x12
So named as the beach at Fort Stevens State Park that is often frequented by retirees fishing and crabbing from the shore. Cape Disappointment is in the background
South Clatsop Slough
Oil 10x14
One of the tidal sloughs that flow into Fort Clatsop National Park

Gillneter on the Blocks
Oil 11x14
A 60+ year old wooden gillnet boat up for repair. This is a study I did at the Astoria boatyard
Old Columbia River Highway
Oil 11x14
This will probably be one of my I-84 series paintings since this was the route before there was an I-84

Airport Walkers
Oil 9 x 12 in
This is my latest painting for Karin Jurick's Different Strokes for Different Folks web site. The unusual perspective was a bit of a challenge.

AMCO
11 x 14 Oil in plein air
Astoria Marine Construction Company (AMCO) is a century old institution on the Lewis and Clark River. I captured this fishing boat up on the ways having bottom work done. I am liking plein air painting more and more. It forces one to work fast and loose, resulting in a style that for me is much more satisfying.

Crown Point
22 x 26 Oil

This is my attempt at a grand landscape overlooking the Columbia River. I painted a study of this scene in plein air and took some reference photos. This painting was completed later in my studio from the study, sketches, and reference photos. I was also inspired by a oil painting I saw hanging in the Crown Point gallery. I can't remember the artist's name but he painted it in the early 1920's at the very same spot I was standing. I went home and painted one of my own.
Village Coffee
11 x 14 Acrylic

A sunny morning outside the coffee house in Multnomah Village

Pink in the Village
11 x 14 Oil

This is one of several painting I did from our visit to NYC in June. I was attracted to the bright pink color of this townhouse in the West Village.

Peril

This is a painting of Big Red as it might appear during one of the many storms that visit the north coast at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Mother Ship

One of two painting I did for the River Sea Gallery's group show "Big Red-Revisited" on September 12 thru October 6, 2009. Currently for sale at the gallery.

Rower on the Lake

It rains a lot in Astoria. This painting was inspired by a trip to the Astoria Coffee House. The scene looks down 11th Street past the Liberty Theater to the Columbia River.

Road Work
Oil, 16 by 20 in.
One of the ubiquitous road construction projects in the summertime along I84. This painting is one in my series on I84, still a work in progress.

Multnomah Village
oil, 16 by 20 in.
I had to paint these brilliant fall colors on the trees along 35th Avenue south of Multnomah Village.

11th and Davis
oil, 16 by 20 in.
The old Portland trolleys only run once in a while. Normally the newer trolleys run on these tracks on 11th Street. So this is a composite using a photo of one of the old trolleys.
